I am deeply grateful for your present… but… I could have wished for the money to be put to another use:- for you to think about yourself a little more. I will not pretend that I cannot make good use of it… and I will, because I know you want me to. But I must ask you not to encourage my extravagance… especially under present circumstances… Will you promise?

I have no news for you, dear. I seem to be properly in a rut just now, and my normal existence is very colourless. We are having a battalion sports day on Sunday, and that should provide something of a contrast to our usual routine. I don’t know whether it is usual for world shattering events to be preceded by games etc… but I recall that a bloke called Raleigh is supposed to have set a precedent!

I will try and write a more intelligent letter tomorrow. Meanwhile, please excuse this lousy effort. There is so little I can say to you.

Au revoir, dear Jess.
Yours always
Trevy

P.S.
