Jess dear,<\/p>\n

There seems to be little I can tell you since my last letter. You will have read about the changed weather conditions out here. Friday’s deluge has transformed our living conditions from those of the desert to a mud swamp. We are pretty filthy with mud just now. But our sleeping holes are still pretty dry… which is something to be thankful for.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, we received some newspapers published the same morning. This in itself is an important news item so far as we are concerned. I have heard one or two radio news bulletins during the last day or two, and have learned a little about the trouble in Germany. It would appear that Hitler has not been assassinated… worse luck. But something fairly big seems to have happened. I wonder whether this is the first real sign of the big ‘crack-up’ we have all been hoping for. It is hard to say with so little information. One writer in yesterday’s News-Chron says the war may now be prolonged if Himmler now has supreme power… and if the dissident generals have been liquidated. I sincerely hope he is wrong.<\/p>\n

I have had no mail for a couple of days, but am hoping for a letter later today. I will then write to you at greater length… providing local conditions permit. It is comparatively<\/strong> peaceful at the moment… and it is not raining, but there is much mist about and low lying cloud… Have been wearing my overcoat… for the first time in weeks.<\/p>\n
