Jess Darling: In your last letter, you tell me that “the second lot of leave is definitely under way in the battalion”, according to Mrs. Wright. I have presumed this must be so because most of the fellows here – from various units – have told me the same thing. But your letter brings the first leave-news I have heard about the 9th. Assuming that we are having our leave in the same rotation as before – the only feasible assumption – then I should be home sometime between the middle and the end of August… But it may even be early in September, because the first man to have his second leave may not have gone on July 1st. He may have had to wait until the first programme had been completed – which would be somewhere around July 7th. However, the difference will only be a few days and I’m sure we can wait that long.
As soon as I rejoin the 9th, I will get all the details and will let you know immediately. Meanwhile, I think we can safely look forward to a re-union in about a month’s time – and that is a hell of a lot to look forward to. It makes me all the more anxious to be on the move from Paris… so that I can learn something really definite and abolish this suspense. Unfortunately, there are still no signs of a move: we have no orders at all yet.
I have done a fair amount of reading today. I picked up one of John Brophy’s books yesterday, and found it very interesting. It was a war story (!) – about the Commandos. I finished it at tea time – and then went for a stroll around the ‘boulevards’ – just mooching and seeing something of the pavement cafes etc.
And even though I have done practically nothing all day, I feel damnably sleepy tonight. I am scheduled for guard tomorrow night, and maybe the thoughts of it are affecting me already… It is rather earlier than my normal bed-time… but bed seems terribly attractive just now, dear – so I think I will go… and sleep… and maybe dream about my lovely wife.
Good night, my love
Always
Your Trevy.
