My Darling, I am now definitely on my way home… and this is the last time I will use the address of the 9th R.T.R. I am writing from the transit camp at Hannover where we arrived at 3.30pm. We are staying here the night, and departing sometime in the morning by train – and I believe we will go straight through to Calais – a twenty-four hour journey.
Most of this morning was devoted to farewells… rather hilarious farewells. Most of the fellows left behind are in fairly low groups – (up to 26) so they will be following us into civvy street within 8 weeks or so.
There are about forty eight of us in this 9th release party – most of them fellows with whom I joined up. We represent practically all that is left of the original unit. Three or four of the lads were very drunk when we departed from the 9th at 2.30 – but they were taken care of… and seem to have recovered this evening.
I feel very queer, darling… I have never before come home to you with a one-way ticket: It is a lovely experience.
I love you Jess…
Always – Trevy.
